Fondness

Eyes that look across the room
I meet your gaze almost without thinking
I wave my hand, we share a grin, a secret smile
And I see you winking

I hold the memory
Of that smile upon your lovely face
And even though you've gone
I close my eyes and see you any place
And when I want to hate you
I realize my heart is such a mess
I can't remember you
With anything but fondness...

When you used to call my name
The sound of love came so sweet to my ears
And your voice would reach my heart
Calming all of my fears

I hold the memory
Of every loving word you used to say
And when I close my eyes
I hear them still, the sound of yesterday
And when I want to hate you
There's only love beneath all my distress
I can't remember you
With anything but fondness...

I recall the taste of your lips
With a certain scent upon the air
And then a memory
Of a touch - your fingers in my hair
And when I want to forget you
I think of all that was, and I confess
I can't remember you
With anything
But fondness.
